Dr. Schleifer Interview: English is an Evolving Language

Language Studies

In this interview, I sat down with Dr. Paul Schleifer, an English professor who specializes in English as a spoken language. I asked him various questions about Samuel Johnson and his influence in lexicography and the Oxford English Dictionary. In this video, I asked Dr. Schleifer what makes English an evolving language. In his answer, Dr. Schleifer says that English speaking people around the world are very open to outside influences. In English, there are so many borrowed words from other languages. He references many examples within languages such as German, French, Chinese, and Spanish. There are many different varieties and versions of English as well. There has always been an openness to mixing with other languages, which is what has made the English language grow over time. Dr. Schleifer also states that along with new technologies come new words. For example, words such as iPhone, iPad, and iPod appeared within the last twenty years. He closes saying that English has the best chance out of any language of becoming a worldwide language because you can speak it any way you want to.
